Hello!
My husband is working from home, soon we will be doing school from home and we are looking for a safe way to take advantage of this time to explore! Looking for a Hi Lo under 24ft and within driving distance from North Florida!
With two littles we would prefer one with a bunk and need a bathroom! I know we are searching for a needle and a haystack but it's worth a try! Thanks!
You may have to travel a bit to get your HiLo. Use the buyers check list. Why so small? What is your tow vehicle? Something to consider. Thew bunks are only rated for around 200lbs. Kids grow and in the long run may not meet your needs.
I expect to have to travel, I don't see travelling further than 8 hours though! We have a 2013 volvo xc90, it can tow up to 4k. I've spoken with my mechanic and told him what we are looking for and says we should be fine.

Ekoola, your Volvo MAY well be able to "pull" 4000#, but what is its payload capacity? Specifically, what is the Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) of each axle on your Volvo. My 17 ft trailer adds close to 500# in tongue weight to the load carried by my truck. Additionally, you would need a Weight Distributing Hitch (WDH) to distribute the tongue load of ANY HiLo trailer over both of your Volvo's axles. Without it, the tongue load would be carried only by the rear axle in the car. The WDH will add around 70# to your payload. Your Volvo will HAVE to have a frame mounted towing hitch receiver rated to at least Class III. That will add even more weight. You CANNOT use a "bumper hitch" to tow a HiLo.
I'm sorry to disagree with your mechanic, but I think your Volvo is not up to the task of pulling a HiLo trailer. I think you would be better off looking for a "pop-up", soft sided trailer.

Ekoola,
My wife and I were talking about selling our 2008 17ft Tow-lite (1708T). We are here in Tallahassee, and we bought it when we had littles, and they are now into their double digits, and we've outgrown it. I've kept it in the garage with a dehumidifier since we bought it in 2011. We bought it in Perry. I've taken the oven/stove out, and turned it into a storage compartment, otherwise it has the bathroom and A/C. There's only the one king bed, but I bought a cot and secure it above the bed for my son to sleep in. Somehow it worked. I pull it with a 2011 Chevy Silverado with no problems. It weighs 2400lbs empty and has electric trailer brakes, so you're vehicle will need to have an electric trailer brake controller installed, etc. Let me know if you're interested.
Generally, you should only tow at 50% of the rated capacity, since the manufacturers are trying to sell cars, not provide an ideal tow. If Florida is completely flat, you might be OK, but the first time you tap the brake going down a grade, you'll wish you had more wheelbase as your 4100 lb trailer pushes your short-wheelbase 4,400 lb Volvo around. Wheelbase is key to towing capacity from the standpoint of avoiding a white-knuckle driving experience. Extended wheel base is like having a longer lever against the trailer's movement. A weight distributing hitch will make up for shorter wheelbases, however, you will likely be transferring some of you tow vehicles weight to the unfortunately undersized HILO tires. If you have 13-14" wheels on the HILO, that's not good, but if you find a HILO with 15" wheels, you should be fine transferring some weight to the trailer.
Nearly all cars and trucks have weak torque convererts from the factory, so I would recommend installation of a trans temp gauge (OBDII makes this easy) and a auxillary trans cooler. If you catch the transmission slipping early, the repair expense will be lower. The trans oil temp is the only indicator you will have until the problem gets really bad that you notice it as a slipping trans or an RPM flare.
Your mechanic may have thought that you werre getting a pop-up Coleman trailer. The weight of the trailer increases when you fill it with water and items you need.
