I could be dealing with some guide rod issues...just ran across a thread detailing how important it is to keep that thing cleaned and lubed.

I haven't even NOTICED it - much less maintained it!

Yes, the guide rod is very important. Failure to maintain it could lead to a bent hydraulic cylinder.
