Hello,
Our second time out in the HiLo and we could not get the refrigerator to work on gas. It should have been simple, turn knob to Gas and automatic ignitor should go on. It does not. I have the 12 volt battery turned on and all else works. We had tried it at home before leaving and no light so we did take coolers. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Try bleeding the propane line first. Turn your stove burner on and ignite it. It might take a minute to do this. This helps to remove any air in the system. Do this prior to using your water heater and furnace.

Mona; Try Bobs idea first. On my HiLo I may have to turn the fridg control off an on a couple of times to finish bleeding the line back to the fridg. If spiders have a web or insects have died in the burner tube the burner will not light. Camping world sells a brush/pipe cleaner that you push into the burner tube to clean it. Will work sometimes. The ignitor could be bad. Gas will not flow if the ignitor is bad. On my fridg there are two fuses behind the fridg. One of them is under a cover on the control panel. The owners manual usually has a good trouble shooting section. If you do not have one get the model number off of the fridg, go online to the manufactures web site and download it. Hope this helps.

Jim L. Thanks for suggestion. The problem is not with bleeding the line I do not think because the stove works fine. We are not even getting the automatic lighter indicator light to come on. Maybe it is a fuse or a bad ignitor? Will take some investigation so any suggestions are welcome.

Mona, in my refrigerator, you can hear the igniter when it tries to light the gas (if you listen carefully). It's the typical "snap", "snap" sound, maybe about a half second apart. Then again, the burner tube may be blocked as Jim suggested. If you can hear the igniter, then the tube must be the culprit.

You can remove the outside panels to get to the points in question.

Does it work on electric...thats first step.for me if it does then alls thats left is Gas end/ igniter/safety system/fuses/plugged vent/plugged line and of course all above suggestions...Some do not like to be out of level...

If it works on 110ac and 12vdc(if its got that option) you 66 2/3 % on your way to fix...good luck

Mona, your 1998 is just one year older than my 1999 Classic. The refrigerators may be the same. On my Dometic, you set the switch to GAS, then push in a red button on the same panel. Hold it in until the needle in the indicator gauge moves and comes into the green section. That means the fridge is lit, and you can stop holding in the red button.

The gas setting seems to be the most efficient of the three, cools better and faster than either of the electric settings. In fact, I start to freeze things in the refrigerator section when the temp control is set only on 2.5.

Since different Hi-Lo models seem to use different refrigerators, your best bet is to get the proper manual for the exact model you have and read up on their operating instructions and if that is not enough, the trouble shooting section. You should be able to get a copy of the manual from the manufacturer's web site.

I've read that keeping the refrigerator level is important to the function.

FWIW: My 2200TL 3 way Dometic refrigerator quit working on LP (worked fine on AC/DC elec) when the wire from the spark generator to the ignition electrode jiggled loose.
Mine is a manual ignition so I could light it with a camp lighter and DW holding in the red 'light' button to provide 'pilot' gas. We did that for several days until the mosquito attack abated and I could service the problem.

Ours is temperamental on propane - has to be like EXACTLY level. We have a 1998 classic 22’
