One of the things I've done to extend the life of our awning is to paint the portion of it that is on the outside of the roll (when rolled up) with white elastomeric roof paint. Kool Seal and Henry's are two popular brands and their use has been talked about on this forum to protect the roof.
It adheres well to the fabric of the awning and is flexible, so it does not interfere with the process of unrolling and rolling up the awning. It is highly reflective and prevents UV damage to the awning material.
This same coating had been used on some outdoor awnings we had on a previous home (it was dyed to match the color too) and it made the old, faded and weakened fabric like new again. It was a permanent solution which lasted without degradation for over a year until we sold the house - and the home inspector did not complain about the awnings needing replacement.
I put two coats of that paint on the upper and side area of the awning roll. It looks completely natural and is cheap and easy insurance.
