I want to replace the cracked thin brown sliding window in the upper part of the entry door (see picture) and am looking for ideas about what material might be best. It should be stiff but bendable enough to place it into the sliding slots.

Go to Home Depot and buy a sheet of plexiglass. It comes in different thicknesses. Use your original piece as a pattern. Drill a hole in it and add a wooden knob to help slide it open and close. Several of our club members have done it this way.

That sounds like it might be even a better option. The one that I purchased doesn't fit the track as good as the original and has to be manipulated to get it to slide open. I may do the plexiglass method, thanks. I still have part of the original one to use as part of a template, it was weathered and cracked up and had been glued back together in a few places.

Thank you all for the feedback! I think also that replacing the slider with a piece of plexiglass cut to size will be best.

The plexiglass slider looks great! I had to shave off some material from the top and bottom edges with a pocket knife to make it fit into the grooves. I made a little handle from a piece of deer bone cut to shape with the Dremel and attached it to the plastic with two small brass screws and some superglue.

The standard slider on mine is contoured to clear the door handle. Did you have any clearance issues with the flat sheet of plexiglass?

The handle is towards the inside and there are only the heads of two small brass screws between the slider and the main window. Used a cutting tool for plexiglass, see Shop PLASKOLITE Plastic Cutting Tool at Lowes.com . Got a piece of scrap plexiglass for one buck and can't remember its thickness. Had to shave off some material from the top and bottom edges with a pocket knife to make it fit into the grooves and slide easily. You may be able to get thinner plexiglass where this would not be necessary.
