Default titles

a few months ago we bought a 1983 hilo. was in pritty good shape for its age. last owner did not have a title. told us because of the age a title was not needed just the bill of sales. perfect. went to register it and was told no way. the bill of sales had to be noterized . problem. last owner moved out of state. no idea where. racking our brains, we had to find a way to register it. ahh, we sold it to our daughter and got new bill of sales noterized. great right? nope , at the regisery the previous owner messed up on the vin number. after 3 hours looking for a vin number on the hilo we gave up. idea, we had all the paper work all the way back to the dealer in florida from 1983. searchig threw it all i found it. bingo, owner put the last 4 numbers of vin at the begining not on the bend. ta da, it is now registered to my daughter. in 6 months we will buy back hilo for the 1 dollar that we sold it to her for.

rastilyn, you are one lucky duck because you found the chain of title on your newly purchased Hi-Lo. The seller is required to provide that paperwork at the conclusion of the transaction, period. It protects you from inadvertently becoming an accomplice to possibly stolen property. Years ago, on this forum, we have heard a few sad stories about people handing over money without receiving the current title (showing no liens or encumbrances) and then towing the Hi-Lo across state lines into another state.
