I recently tested my manual lowering valve. Since I was by myself, I pulled the release cable and used a claw hammer to hold the cable out by putting the claw in the cable loop and laying the hammer on the floor. The weight of the hammer holds the cable out so you can walk to the front and open the manual release valve.
It's better if you have an assistant though!
