Default July 2011 Trip

I took my 1982 HiLo on a 4340 mile trip from Texas to Tennessee, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and back through Arkansas. Stayed at these state parks: Lake Catherine, AR; Pickwick Landing, TN, Harrison Bay, TN; Caledonia, PA; Lackawanna, PA; Clear Creek, PA; Whitewater, IN; Eldon Hazlet, IL; and Withrow Springs, AR. The HiLo pulled real well and only knocked my gas mileage down by about 2 mpg.

Any of these parks you would recommend or avoid?

Clear Creek State Park is about ten miles east of where our camping spot in the woods is located. How did you happen to stop there?

The parks I stayed at in Pennsylvania, Indiana and Illinois had no water hook ups. Those in Tennessee, Arkansas, and my other trips in Texas did have water hook ups. Withrow Springs in Arkansas even had a sewer connection. Other than that, mos of the parks were acceptable.

I tried not to go over about 250 miles in a day of driving, so from Lackawanna SP Clear Creek was about the right distance. I have since decided that at least 300 miles in a day's drive would be OK. Since I made reservations in advance, I stayed with my schedule. Clear Creek SP was the best of the 3 I stayed at in Pennsylvania.

A few mile up SR36 from Clear Creek SP is Cook Forest SP. It has a good campground also. It is larger than Clear Creek, I think. I would suspect that many PA state park campgrounds do not have water hookups partly because the ground freezes in the winter and they don't want to mess with draining waterlines. Also, they can conserve on water usage by not providing hookups. They probably would do some upgrading in the campgrounds but they really get kicked around by the state when it comes to money.

If you are ever camping up here again, check out Ohiopyle SP, it is my favorite PA park.

We have also been to Ohiopyle several times and have enjoyed it. There is great rafting and biking available in town.
