Default 1972 Lift Max Weight?

New here, hi! I'm looking to retrofit this unit (https://minneapolis.craigslist.org/w...333887130.html) with a residential-sized solar system/generator. This means putting 500pnds of distributed weight (10 solar panels) on the roof. Would the hydraulic lift support that?

Also, this unit uses a manual wheel crank, I'm curious how difficult it would be to upgrade to an electric lift. Thoughts?

Thanks!

That is a lot of weight. I guess I would be concerned though I am not aware of any numbers out there that tell you how much the lifting mechanism will tolerate.

I suspect adding the hydraulic/electric would be a bit of chore. You need to install the ram underneath with all the mounting structure as well as the hydraulic pump up front and run the hydraulic lines. I cant imagine doing it with the hassle and cost unless I was just really interested in seeing if I could figure it out----which i wouldn't be. But who knows- at some point that is what HI-LO did !

As an aside- that many panels almost seems like over-kill, unless you are trying to do something with it that I'm not thinking of. Three or four 100 watt panels, especially if they were the thin kind without frames etc, would seem to give you all the charging capacity you would want given the size of batteries you could carry. That a charming little trailer by the way. I like the crank. Welcome to the forum!

Thanks Rick, we're trying to prototype a disaster response micro-grid - 3kw array (500pnds roof weight), 10kwh LI battery bank (225 pnds on the floor), and 4kw inverter/charger (150pnds on the floor).

I think we could strip the interior down to get to a total weight manageable for the axle, and the steel frame can handle the distributed weight of the panels, but my concern is the lift... Any info on these lifts weight ratings would be much appreciated!

Somewhere here in FL, we saw a similar home-made unit using an old U-Haul cube truck. Covered with panels, one on the cab roof! Plenty of room for repair materials and tools. Post hurricane Irma.
