1984 HiLo won't stop raising!
Help!!!!
I put the high-low switch in the up position and the camper started to raise. I released the switch but instead of stopping the camper just kept going up until it was at the maximum height but the motor kept running. I had to disconnect the battery to make it stop. This is the second time this happened. The first time I replaced the Shortstop 30A circuit breaker located next to the motor and it worked properly... for about 4 cycles and then it happened again. The previous owner also replaced the circuit breaker and I wonder if he replaced it with the correct one. Does any know what circuit breaker it should have or any other ideas of what may be causing the motor not stopping when the camper is all the way up?

The overload circuit breaker should not be the problem. It sounds more like the automotive type solenoid that is on the hydraulic pump, or the switch is bad, or there is a problem with the wiring.

sounds like there is dirt in the soleniod or a short in the wiring,

Make it three votes for the solenoid! The circuit breaker is just a symptom and correctly doing what it should ... that is to prevent some serious damage elsewhere. It shouldn't be difficult to remove the solenoid (I take a photo before removing wires, my memory isn't as infallible as it once was). It would be nice to know if the Geezers were correct.

I vote for the 3 position switch is bad/dirty/corroded (as this seems to be, My hilo's problem) I have to actually kind of touch the down side of that rocker switch, to make it go back to neutral or "not doing anything". the switch on mine is up is up, let off is stop, down is down, mine sticks a little on the up when you let off, so I just barely push towards down, and everything is fine... Kinda like jiggling the handle on the throne in master bedroom at home, once in a while...
I need to replace the switch probably, but have not yet.

hydraulic pump!
I have a customer that asked me if I would look @ a 1968 Snyder hi/lo for her. She was having problems with it raising and lowering. When I got there someone else had already been working on it. They had all the wiring loose on the hydraulic pump solenoid breakers and control switch, I was hoping someone out there might have a copy of a wiring diagram or a couple pics they would send me. It has been in her family for years and she wants to fix it back up.

Not all HI-LOs had a master switch, Our 95 TowLite doesn't, but our 2209 does.

Thank you all for the great suggestions! I will try the things you have suggested later this week. Today I got the garage door opener removed from the attic and the hole in the ceiling fixed where the unstoppable HiLo relocated the opener. The good news is that the opener prevented damage to the AC unit. Once the new opener is in place I'll take it outside to work on and test (the trauma to my wife watching the HiLo going into the attic isn't worth a repeat).

WOW, that must have been a heart stopping experience. Disconnect the small wire that operates the solenoid, this will eliminate the switch and the wiring as the possible cause. If it still goes up replace the solenoid.

New solenoid: $26
Garage repair: $900
Install 30 amp switch to shut off power in battery cable in case it isn't the solenoid: $12
Remembering the look on my wife's face as the trailer was being relocated to the attic: Priceless.
PS: I don't know what the rocker switch is for that is located between the telescoping toggle switch and the release cable. It doesn't do anything (on or off) and the previous owner didn't know what it was for. This is an 1984 and I don't remember seeing it in the newer models. Do you know what it is suppose to do?

Sorry but you make me laugh every time I read this. Glad to see that you are taking it pretty well. Hope it works out. Looks like you didn't try with the small wire disconnected from the solenoid, this would have told you if it was the wiring, switch or the solenoid. Back to your question, some older trailers had a 3 position rocker switch and all new ones do also as far as I know. It is called a master switch, push bottom in an the trailer up and down will work but nothing else. Put in middle position and everything is off except the fridge. Push top position and interior lights etc. work, in this position the trailer switch for up and down is turned off. Hope this helps. There is a newer manual posted in the forum and it explains the Master Switch. Should also be a picture, I know my 2209 manual has it in.
