Default Cylinder Leaking

I just bought my '88 Funlite and the piston is leaking. The trailer is in the up position and the cylinder is vented (no hydraulics left). Can I remove the cylinder with the top up? I dont want it to crash down? Has anyone done this before?

I haven't done it but I would recommend cutting some 2X4's the length from the ground to the bottom of the top and place them at the 4 corners as a safety.
