Welcome to the forum bluewindsue. If you look under "General HiLo Discussion", go to page 7, and look for "Glide Block Replacement". It gives a description of what to do. I believe someone else posted pics of how they did it. Having a senior moment and can't remember who or where that string is located.

Your discription is a little strange, the Guide Blocks are made of tough plastic.

I did them on my 2693RD it wasn't that hard.
As the thread referred to stated, take off the glide rails. After, I raised the just high enough to work on it using a garage stool that is about 14" off of the ground. That left enough slack in the cables to wedge a couple of 2x4's between the top and bottom halves. Use two one longer to pry (gently) and another to "shim" underneath it.
I split the old ones off with a cold chisel and backed the screws out with a pair of pliers since I was replacing them as well.
I slipped the new blocks and new screws up underneath and used just the tip out of a screw gun and a 1/4" wrench to drive the screws in. It was a little time consuming but it wasn't hard. Pick up an automotive inspection mirror, it helped tremendously.
I dabbed a little almond silicone (my 1993 matches the almond silicone exactly) in all of the screw holes for the glide rails when I reinstalled them as well.
Let me know if you have any questions.
