Default ac unit acting up

I just bought a 1977 hilo 19 footer last month. The Coleman ac works, but occasionally when starting it rumbles. Last night the fan started squeaking. I went ahead and shut off the unit to keep from burning up the fan motor. I plan on crawling up and seeing if i can oil or grease the fan motor.

Has anyone put an energy saver type control on an older unit that would change fan speeds automatically and turn the ac on and off when the set temperature is reached? My window ac unit in my house has a control just like this. Or can I buy a lower housing that has all of that built in?

Default update

I took the cover off and found the fan motor was not spinning freely. Looking at the motor I found two lubrication holes. I put some 5w30 motor oil in and it started to spin better. But it will not start spinning on its own. I have to push the fan blade to get it started.

Anyone have ideas on how I should proceed? Any help or pointers would be appreciated.

Erik

Try some WD-40 and let it run for several minutes. If it frees up then use heavy oil or thin grease.
Hopefully you will get it freed up. The WD-40 will act like a solvent and very light lube.

Thanks Slider.

I let it run and heard no squeals. So the next day I put in more motor oil as the motor ran. Oil literally flowed out of the bottom of the motor. Now it starts on it's own.

Would 80w90 be too heavy?

Does anyone else have an ac fan motor they oil?
