Default Another Fridge question

On my 17 there is a fan above the fridge in the upper half that blows out but when the Hi Lo is closed it doesn't work. I hear a fan behind the fridge but don't feel any air blowing out. Why does the fan in the upper half only work when Hi Lo top is fully raised?

Hi Ed - for that fan to work, the refrigerator has to be running and the temperature in the condenser coils next to the fan has to be above a certain level (I seem to remember 120 degrees F, but I could be wrong). If those conditions are met, the fan SHOULD run with the top down, in fact it is important that it DOES run then so the condenser can be cooled properly when you are stopped while traveling and the fridge is on.

So, if it is NOT running then, I would guess there is a wiring problem. AND, I don't really have any great suggestions for trouble shooting. It is NOT controlled by the Master Switch, only by the switch near the fridge and the fridge operation/condition.

I will do some checking, we turned on the fridge at 10 pm and it ran all night. we moved the Hi Lo out of the garage at 6am the next morning and raised the top up and the upper fan started. I will lower and raise the rv a couple of times and see what will happen.

Took the covers off the top and bottom and looked at how things are installed. The fan is blowing through the top vent when top is raised but when tops lowered it is just blowing at the inside against the wood. It seems to me that there should be a fan at the bottom that would blow air through both vents when top down and unless someone tells me why that is a bad idea that is what I will do.

Ed, it sounds like maybe your fan is mounted improperly. I replaced the OEM fan in mine with two PC fans that move more air, run quieter and use less electricity. I called it the "Sushidog Mod" in honor of the member that first came up with this idea. Many members have done this mod in different ways since then. It's in this thread, starting at Post #14: https://www.hilotrailerforum.com/f35...rator-fan-261/

The important thing, as far as you're concerned, is where the fans are mounted. You want your fan in that position.

I like Jack replaced the single fan...but if two were better, I went with three....just saying

In this case, MORE IS BETTER! I just wasn't bright enough to think of doing that.

i would guess most people would not operate the fridge while the top is down and Hilo probable had that thought too, but as jack said, fan should only operate at temp. so maybe yours is straight wired OR i may remember someone mentioning a fan off on switch
