Well I don't get it. We own a 1985 Funmaker, it's been in the family since 87. The wife and I have had possession of it since 1997, we stopped using it in 2005. Sat in the driveway here in Toronto Canada for 11 solid years. We have winter, spring, summer and fall. Plenty of minus 30 degree days and 90 plus degree days. Plenty of wet springs. After a week of reading this site it occurred to me, hey I should check the condition of those cables and pulleys. So I did and to my amazement they are in perfect condition, not a fray or an orange tinge of rust anywhere. Now the colour of the cables aren't that shiny silver colour but more like dull grey.
Anyway with the cables being in such great shape after 31 years I'm starting to wonder why I wd40'd everything even the top ones inside. Hopefully they don't start rusting now
