Pop,
From the How Stuff Works document:
"once you reach certain gross trailer weights, a weight distribution system is required by law anyway."
BIG thanks for posting all this WD hitch information. Particularly interesting was the statement quoted above. Now I'm curious as to where my state stands on this!
Great reference material for the HTF Library, especially considering some of the recent thread discussions!
Jim

Here's the owner's manual/setup instructions for the Equal-I-Zer hitch. You really do it the same way, essentially, as the ones that use chains. The only difference is that the Equal-I-Zer has built in sway control, so there's no separate mechanism for that function.
The How Stuff Works link that Rich posted talks about choosing a setup that is "just strong enough" for the tongue weight. You don't want to use a 1400# hitch for a 600# tongue weight. I think having about 100# more capacity is sufficient.

Just click on your state. My understanding though is that if you cross state lines, you must comply with that state's laws.

If I can just get the hooking up and mainly the unhooking down to a "T" I will really be a happy camper.

Since the season is almost upon us (Yeah- Go Chargers!), I'll use a football analogy. When you're a rookie you have to think a lot about what you're doing . . . what is that play the quarterback just called? . . . what am I supposed to do? . . . should I be blocking that guy? When you have a little experience, you just go out and perform! Can you tell I'm excited about the season?

I must be an expert now because I read the article and got 100% on the quiz:
HowStuffWorks "Towing Weight Distribution Quiz"
Oh wait, now I have to apply my knowledge?

Thanks Rich for the great photos of your hitch set up. It will be a great help. Already been out checking mesurements. I am working the next 12 days, but after that, I plan on getting it installed. Our next trip is to San Diego, hope to be set, ready to go!

Oops!
Finally got around to attempting to get the hitch weight using the bathroom scale method, as described in my Good Sam book. The way it is supposed to work is to use a 300 lb. bathroom scale. The weight is distributed a certain way so just take the reading from the scale and multiply by 3, so theoretically you should be be able to get a reading for anything 900 lbs or less.
The bad news is I broke the bathroom scale - the good news is DW is out of town!
Either my set up was wrong or my hitch weight exceeds 900 lbs. So the question is, where do I go from here?

Greg, thanks for trying the bathroom scale method for me as I was thinking about doing the same thing. You saved me the price of a new scale, so now I know for sure I will go to a truck scale.

You're welcome! I guess I will need to do the same. I need to review the procedure for doing that. I think there is a thread on the forum somewhere that describes how to do it, just need to find it . . .
