I'm pretty new to the camping world and very new to our "new" 1999 Hi Lo 21footer. My question is we are looking at a particular campground to visit and they say no "popups".

Do you know if most campgrounds consider the Hi Lo as a popup? Can you put it up before entering the campground as it then looks just like a travel trailer? I'm showing how little I know about this. But we really are enjoying and love our Hi Lo.......thanks. donm.

1) It's not a pop up. Of course some one at a campground may think it is.

2) No, you can't put the top up before driving in the campground. You would potentially do some serious damage to the top and the lift system.
 
My title (Texas) says it is a travel trailer. I would say "telescopic" instead of pop up would get you by.
 
Popups in campgrounds

Popops have canvas. If a campground made me raise up the HiLo at the admission gate I probably wouldn't want to camp with such "snobs." I would take my money elsewhere. I have read about some campgrounds that want the rig to be 10 yrs.or younger. We stay mostly at state campgrounds and have never had a problem with admission. Perhaps those that have traveled more extensively could comment.
 
because all sides are hard,not canvas, it is a travel trailer. some campgrounds do not want pop-ups because of varments (racoons,possums-bears,cougars)getting in to them and having lawsuits because of them, also party noise travels through them.
 
We have traveled over a hundred thousands miles with a Hi-Lo, have stayed in all kinds of camp grounds and have never had a problem, If we make reservations we list it as a travel trailer. The popup restriction is as robobd stated, that's what I have found. A Hi-Lo is not a popup.
 
I'm sure they allow slide outs. A Hi-Lo is just a trailer with a vertical slideout!
 
I would ask the campground people what they define a popup to be.
 
It never ceases to amaze me that we have come to this. When I used to use the pop-up truck camper there were places that did not allow truck campers. When I used to travel on a sailboat- there were Marinas that did not like sail boats!

Life is short. Way too short to be worrying about what the person next to you is camping in. If people are fancy enough to worry about what my particular mode of traveling accomodations are.........it is probably above my price range to stay in, anyway. Ok- this should probably be posted in a "rant" category.

I vote for "travel trailer" with a really unique "vertical slideout" :cool:

Popup restrictions in a campground

If a campground needs to restrict popups for safety reason (animal attacking canvas and people inside then the reason should be posted on the website/reservation system.)

Agreed, Rick. Life is WAY too short. Sometimes, fly fishing gets the same rap. I've fished with conventional gear maybe 5 or 6 times in the last 5 years and almost exclusively fly fish. I'm very "non-denominational" when it comes to fishing, so each to his or her own.

Pop Up????

I've only experienced the "pop up" question once. Upon signing into a state park in Lousiana the host was filling out the registration information and make a statement, "it's a pop up". Well that got the hair on the back of my neck stanging up, ha. Not really. But I did correct him that it was a travel trailer. He had never seen a Hi Lo and became quite interested.

Another funny happening was once when fueling a car pulled along and said something about having to really be short to get in that camper. If you ever hear that there is an easy answer that will send the questioner away scratching his head. Just tell them it's really a camper for midgets! Now that blew his mind. ha
Agree, life is too short, never been denied entry into a campground and if I do well I guess I didn't want to stay there anyway!

I've never been denied a site at a campground or have been questioned about the "catagory" my HiLo is. I, too, have told people that the previous owner was a midget or that I bought the HiLo at a half off sale.:D Bottom line is that the HiLo is a telescoping travel trailer.

No Popups in parts of Yellowstone.

Sometimes you want to keep out more than just the weather!! When we went to Yellowstone in 2010, many places had restrictions on hard-sided rigs only-due to the bear threat. Another reason you'll be glad you bought a Hi-Lo. On that 5500 mile trip, we never had any problems with "not qualifing" to stay in any park we wanted to.
BTW I was told by a RV park employee once that the city of Scottsdale, AZ has an ordainance forbidding any RV over 10 years old from staying the night. Anyone have any verification?:confused: What a bunch of NAZIS! Just because our rigs aren't new it doesn't mean we don't take care of them! Some of us have and love older rigs because they are OLDER(mine's an '84). I've seen some of the older rigs that actually look better than the new ones due to the "customization" of imaginative owners! CAMP ON!
 
Ah yes, Snobsdale, AZ the land of red light cameras on every corner. I got a photo ticket on my motorcycle about 5 years ago that was sent to the ex's address in Tucson. Four phone calls explaining the bike hadn't been registered in several years and I got a kid on the line that said the bike in the picture wasn't a BMW since he had the same bike...duh! It's funny to see the Hi-Lo ads for the Phoenix metromess when they say a Hi-Lo collapses down to meet HOA requirements. Sure am glad I don't have to live like that anymore.

Yes they do have a 10 year rule at alot of places in Az plus a pop up trailer rule plus a length rule. We have friends that had a 19ft Hi-Lo and were told they couldn't stay at several places because their Hi-Lo was too short and would be out of place. We were also told at a couple places that they really prefer the big rigs. We checked several different places when we were there without our Hi-Lo as we had thought about wintering there a couple years ago. After hearing all the rules, etc. we decided Texas was a nice place to be for a few months during the winter plus it's ALOT cheaper. So instead of being Snowbirds we choose to be Winter Texasans. Our Hi-Lo isn't 10 yrs old yet and it did fit the length rule but I still didn't want to be somewhere where we really weren't wanted.
