Spring 2017 Virginia AT trip, single orange flower alongside the Appalachian Trail at the New River crossing near Pearisburg, VA. This single bloom is most likely a "volunteer" and was located in the grass median between a Celanese chemical plant and US highway 460 whose bridge the AT uses to cross the New River. The New River could be one of the oldest rivers in the world and one of only a few north flowing rivers in the country on its way to join the Ohio River.
