We realized standing on the edge of the Grand Canyon during a thunderstorm might not be a good idea when everyones hair started to stand up -- he rain for cover like a bunch of little girls!
Actually this is a very peaceful picture that doesn't capture the true chaos that is Ft. Stevens. I was almost run over by a kid on a bike just after taking this photo....
Ft. Stevens was a HUGE military base from the Civil War until after WWII. This is a cannon battery from WWII. The huge guns were on turrets that could be lowered and made invisible from the ocean.
The baby was sleeping - so we had to park and have lunch in the camper... There are a few places at Ft. Stevens that allow you to drive right out on the sand. A rarity in Oregon.
Not in the Fossil Beds - but if you make it to Joihn Day this is worth the stop. The modern history of Eastern Oregon would not be complete without this important story of the Chinese laborers...
