I keep mine up as well year round. I do put 4x4's on the outriggers to keep the stress off the cables. I figured it cant hurt.

I had to make the same repair on my camper. I used a 12in piece of 1/8 aluminum angle. I did it with the top up and supported all 4 corners with vertical 2x4s. I had to adjust my cable all the way out to get enough slack to reattach the cable to the top. I have not tried to lower or adjust...
