shore power

2006 model 5291 gulfstream. Start the engine cabin batteries receive a charge. Turn motor off , plug in shore power line no charging is detected. I have nearby a/c plug and have place a small trickle charger setup back to the batteries as a hillbilly fix. Any comments appreciated.
