1959 Hi Lo

Hi everyone!
We will be picking up our 1959 Hi Lo in the next few weeks. I am very excited to start the renovations. It will need a full rebuild of everything! Thankfully, everything is there for the most part, so its just a matter of replacing all wood and checking/repairing/replacing all systems as needed.

I was curious if anyone on her has a hi-lo as old as ours? I would love to see photos and any tips or recommendations that would help us in our journey.

I didn't realize HiLos were manufactured that long ago. A word of caution since you asked for advice. Some of our forum members have had no luck in getting brake parts for 1970 models. I wouldn't want you to get this and then not be able to get the parts toass inspection. Perhaps you could give JR a call in Ohio to see about availability of parts. 1-419-883-3001.

Your HiLo would definitely qualify for the classic category! Send in some photos of your 1959 HiLo to the forum, please. Did it happen to have the owner's manual? If the repairs are going to be extensive, you will find a lot of information on this forum to help you.

Does the lift system still work? Does it show any indications of leaks in the roof or deterioration of the walls? I hope you have an inside area to store it during your renovation. Sam has posted a response already and is correct regarding brake parts for that model but you can always replace the axle with a newer model. A good mechanic/welder can shorten the axle to your specifications if one is not available; I know this from personal experience.

I *think* this trailer does not have brakes. It is the 13 foot model. There are no leaks that we could immediately see but all the wood is shot from dry rot and we will be replacing it all. The floor has a soft spot, so we will replace that as well. The lift system needs to be repaired. We will also need to replace a skin panel on the very front under the window. It's going to take us all winter...LOL

I will hopefully have pictures up next week. The body style didn't change much in the early 60's. It is like this one, except the kitchen is on the drivers side wall next to the dinette.

1964

Hello,
I have a 1964 Hi-lo like the one in the photo, but with the sink on the drivers side wall. I need to replace some wood in the upper portion in the walls and also the paneling in some areas. So if you tear into it please send photos. I'd be interested in seeing how the top is framed in. Anyway I hope your project is going good. Thanks Don

I have a 65 HiLo Bon Voyage 18'. Most technical part of my lift system is my arm! I was able to have the surge brakes rebuilt without much problem. Had to match up the master cylinder with an auto type, but wasn't a problem. If I can find how to, I will post some pics of mine.
