1998 22L Classic will not raise

Hi,
Hi-Lo, new member hope you can help.
Just got back from three week trip with little problems. When I got home (last 500 miles) noticed all hydraulic fluid leaked out. Cleaned up and refilled to 1 in top when in lowered state.
Problem - when raising motor runs and raises about 2 feet and will not go up any more. When releasing up switch trailer will slide back down.
Checked batt. 12.5v
Trailer level with no obstructions
Fluid full and found no leaks around pump or lines.
Can not pump up with manual handle method.
Lower solenoid in clockwise closed position.

Welcome to the group.

In my manual, they list the following possibilities for "Top Will Not Raise - Lift Motor Runs":
1. Low on ATF (sounds like you took care of that)
2. Lowering valve stuck in open position or needs adjusting
3. Air in pump chamber
4. Pressure relief settings too low


I'd guess you have problem 2 or 3 in this list.

Do you have a copy of the Owner's Manual? If not, they're found in the Library section of this forum, on the home page, near the bottom. Look for "Library", and then click on "Owner's Manuals" in that section.

That it seems to have lost fluid makes me wonder if there’s a leak (even if just a slow one).

How low was it? Did it take a lot of fluid to refill?

After trying to lift, is the reservoir still full?

I’m just speculating here, but this behaviour (some motion, but not full range) sounds a lot like a hydraulic system with air in it. If it was completely empty it’s possible to have gotten some air in. Since air is compressible (hydraulic fluids aren’t), once it moves a bit the air compresses and stops any further motion.

But as I said, just speculation. Some of the pro’s around here may have some better insight.

I do have a manual and have tried 1 2&3 several times. Number 4 pressure relief to low not tested. I may have to buy a valve to test.

Reservoir full and no leaks found. Still looking at air in system but with no luck trying to remove with my manual.
