We have a 50 lb lab mix who loves to slam up against the bottom half of the door when the top is open and then escape and race around the campground loops endlessly. I’m trying to come up with a latchingsystem that could be latched from the side or outside. Other than gluing velcro attachments and going with a strap type arrangement, does anybody have a better idea or has anyone come up with a different latching system? I also thought of boring a hole thru the door and putting in a latch like what is on our wood fence gate.

Thanks
Rick

Bottom Door Latch

I added a latch to the top edge of my 1999 Towlite 22TL bottom door. I Had to drill a hole in the door frame to allow the latch bar to slide into it but by selecting a flat style bar latch, there were no clearance issues with the upper half of the door. By installing on the top edge of the door, it is easily opened from the inside or outside.

You wouldn’t have a photo of that, would you? Do you mean you mounted it flush on the top edge?

Bottom Door Latch

My trailer is away at my storage location so I don't have a photo but I surface mounted the slide bolt on the top edge of the lower door. Here is a link to the bolt I used: https://www.menards.com/main/hardwa...4-c-7581.htm?tid=-7757577868452970658&ipos=26.

In case you don't want to follow that link, it is called a Security Slide Bolt made by First Watch. I got mine at Menards. It is low profile and does not interfere with the upper door closing.
