Carlyle Tire blowout

Beach and I are on the road with our son and his family in Orange County, Florida. Today, just before we made the I-4 turnoff from I-95, the left rear tire just exploded. We put these Carlyles on approximately 3 to 3-1/2 years ago and have not put that many miles on them. In addition, we cover these tires when the camper is stored at home. In the morning Beach will have a good look under the Hi-Lo to see if the explosion caused any further damage, like tearing up the wheel well or any piping. Yesterday, it hit 105F. On I-95 between Savannah and St Mary's, GA. I wonder if heat like that contributed to the failure today.

We really need to buy a spare before leaving for home, and it certainly won't be Carlyle. It's a Chinese piece of crap. Does anyone have a success story to tell me about their RV tires and what tires you purchased? Thanks for your help.

Blowout

Dee, Several months ago I found that my spare was beyond saving due to rot under a spare tire cover. Asked around the forum and amazon and found that Maxxis M8008 ST 205/75R15 Load Range D was quite a bit better than several other trailer tires. I had the tires mounted AND balanced locally. I only have about 3800 miles, so I can't say more on duration. But I know that the balancing made a difference on towing.
Breakdown on cost:
Tires $106 ea (free shipping, DOT Date showed 11 months old)
Mount 10 ea
Balance 5 ea
$121 X 4 = $484 for peace of mind, it's worth it!
Only problem I had was, they were going to use a floor jack, but I stayed with them and used my Trailer Aid as needed to prevent frame damage.

No expert, but on I-10 between Palm Springs and Blythe, California, the highway is littered with blown tires due to the extreme heat. My tread lose was on I-10 just east of Tucson, Arizona, which also has extreme heat. No damage to the trailer.

Treeclimber, thank you so much for the information on the Maxxis. Beach will try to find one Tues. We have a day to ourselves that day away from the kids and grandchildren. Before your recommendation, we were thinking Marathon tires. We just can't seem to find RV tires for campers made in USA. Again, thanks.

Garry, I agree. The extreme heat on I-95 we experienced this past Friday contributed toward our tire blow out. What was the name of the tire you were running when you had your blowout? I'll bet better ones are made in the USA, IF YOU COULD FIND ONES!!

Sorry to hear about the blowout, glad you all are okay. I was surprised when I went to buy tires that even the Goodyear Marathon is made in China. It's to the point now that we carry two spares in the truck plus the one on the trailer bumper. Wheel bearings are made in China, so we carry two extra sets of those too. One thing I try to do is check the temperature of the tires and hubs when we stop on the road with an infrared gun. Gives a good idea of what's going on with the underside.

Dee. Maxxiis were recommended to me two years when I bought my 2007 trailer with the original tires on it. So far so good. I've put 3300 miles on them so far.

Underpaid, I wish we had enough room in the bed of the truck to carry those extra spare parts. However, if we were heading for the isolated outback, we certainly would find room for those parts.

LuckyDog, we have been calling all over the Orlando area for a Maxxii tire. No luck unless we order one. We don't have the time to wait on it. If anyone has any ideas who might have one in stock around here, it would be greatly appreciated if they would let us know. Thanks.

I don't recall what the brand was. Just know when we returned home I put the trailer away for the season and when spring rolled around I pulled the trailer out and was on the way to get four new tires when I lost another tread. Fortunately I was less than a half mile from home and had not gotten on the freeway. I could not find Maxxis locally and put on Carlisle's which are made in China. We drove 8500 miles on one trip last year and just completed 4600 miles this year and have not had any problems, but I would feel better if we had U. S. made tires.

Dee, I've been out of internet access for about a week, but I echo the recommendation for Maxxis tires. I just replaced mine on the trailer after maybe 4 years? and never had a problem with them.

Also, because heat is a source of tire failure, I highly recommend the TireMinder tire and temperature monitoring system from Minder Research. I've got the sensors installed on my tow vehicle and on my trailer and they allow me to constantly monitor the temperature and pressure in all my tires. I've had NO false alarms or signal dropouts with this system either. The one problem I had (my own stupidity) was quickly resolved through a phone call to Minder Research.

I personally have no distrust of a product based on where it is made. Look at all the Apple products, considered best in the world and yet every one made in China. It isn't the Chinese with the problem, it is the executives asking them to cut every possible corner to make the product as cheap as possible. Some companies basically design, engineer, and then order a peice of junk. China just makes what was ordered.

If you saw the condition of his business, you certainly would not hand him any advance money; it looked like a used tire grave yard, not a thriving new tire business. Therefore, there is a business in the Orlando area named Discount Tire which has branches all over the area and seems to have a heavy monopoly in the area in selling D-load 15" camper tires, and guess what, they are pushing Carlisles and, of course, have them in stock and would have had to order a Maxxi with a five-day wait time. Yes, you got it, we purchased the Carlisle for a not so discounted price. When we get home, we will deal with replacing all of these tires.

As stated, I put Carlisle's on our trailer last yer before we did our 8500 mile trip and we have put an additional 4700 miles on them since then. So far I have not had any problems and when I bought them at America's Tire, which is Discount Tires in other parts of the U. S., I paid extra for a warranty contract which would cover tire replacement if the tire fails or is damaged by normal road hazards. I'm sure I would be challenged on any claim.
