You can make some yummy little cakes in the dutch oven. A small cake pan, a can of pie filling, and Jiffy cake mix. Dump the pie filling, cherry is my favorite, into the pan, and sprinkle the cake mix over the pie filling. Place three little stones in the bottom of the dutch oven, as spacers, then set the pan on top of the stones. Set the dutch oven on the coals and wait about 25 minutes. You will be treated with a nice little upside down cake. It may take some experimenting to get it right, but the mistakes are still usually eatable.

We just got the new dutch oven at Christmas and can't wait to give it a try. To do it right or with the most control of heat you should use charcoal briqettes for heat. The dutch oven cook books instruct on how many to use for each recipe. You place so many on the lid and so many underneath.

This came from a book called "Roughing It Easy" by Dian Thomas. We just streamlined it a little. The book calls it "Cherry Delight" but you can call it whatever you want depending on what fruit pie filling you use. We used a large can of cherry pie filling and a box of Jiffy yellow cake mix. You can use half a box of your favorite cake mix instead. The recipe called for the dutch oven to be lined with foil and the ingredients dumped directly on it. We chose the cake pan which prevented burning of the ingredients.
