I have two fiberglass 20# bottles, one has never been filled. Very light weight and see through, explosion proof. Bought these when we had the small camper and don't need them any more. $80 each or two for $140.

I've seen these (rarely), and have always wondered how well they would stand up to a rock impact. I'm guessing that a protective shell would be necessary as propane tanks are typically mounted in a vulnerable place.

These bottles are very thick and special fiberglass, I don't think you could ever put a hole in them with a rock. They are DOT approved and if they are in a fire they won't explode like a steel tank will, they just burn till they vent all the gas.
Here is a picture.

I believe steel tanks have a thermally activated release plug that is located opposite of the outlet that will melt down and release the LP in the event of a fire and reduce the threat of an explosion. It will look like a giant blowtorch for a few minutes, but the gas will be dissipated. I saw, from a distance, two 100# tanks do that in a house fire one time. It was a bit scary as I recall.
