If the safety bar is in place while the top is in the up position and a cable snaps
does the bar prevent the top from crashing on the owners head ???

I have had two cables snap when trying to raise the top. But always while it was in process of being raised, never while we were in it.

Thanks
Ray

The safety bar locks the lift cylinder, not the top itself. A broken cable will result in a corner coming down and sagging. It probably will not result in the rest of the cables breaking and the top coming down.

Cable Break Concern

Thanks for the reply Norton Rider.

The 2008 1908T Hilo I bought in 2010 had two cables snap at the same time as I lifted the top the 2nd time I had it out (was not in trailer).

Since it was used, I had to pay to replace all 4 cables with thicker cables.

The new cables probably won't snap again as I keep them oiled.

My concern is them yanking out of the attach points since this critical part of the trailer has the cable bolts screwed into wood and not the metal frame of the upper half of trailer.

It doesn't give me the warm fuzzies.

Again, thanks for the info. The manual doesn't seem to explain the exact nature of the workings of the "safety bar". I assumed it would hold the top up
if the cable or the pump failed in the up position.

I think you'd have to have all four cables break, possibly simultaneously, for the top to come crashing down. If one or two break, the sag will cause binding, which will tend to hold the top up for a bit, and will probably make it difficult to lower, until you can jack up the low points to gradually lower it.

Snapped Cables will Cause Upper Half to Bind

Good point JackandJanet.

When my two cables snapped at the campground at Roaring River Missouri when
I was raising it, it did bind on the side opposite of the door, but the door side was low.

It left a gouge in the wall.

It took four husky Mennonites to lift the top, unbind it and lower it fully.

Had it out numerous times since then.

I took it to Beaver Lake Arkansas campsites below the dam last week and experienced how camping can revive the soul.....:)
