Snow

We are due to get up to 5" of snow over the next couple of days (a lot for us ). Of course, I have the trailer in the down position but since we plan on "camping out" in the driveway over the Thanksgiving holiday, I have not yet put a cover on it. So the question is, is it OK to have 5" of snow on the roof of a Hi-Lo?

Hoping to hear from some of our northern members on this one . . .

Lucky, I'm no Northerner, but I'd guess that 5" of WET snow could weigh a lot. Better to push it off before that much accumulates.

5" of snow is fine if the trailer is in the down position. Take it from someone that lives downwind from Lake Erie. If it should continue to build up it would be wise to try to remove it.

I have been known to use my gas leaf blower to remove snow off the HiLo roof. Less chance of damaging the roof this way. My city is on the shores of Lake Erie. We get the "regular" snow plus "lake effect" snow.

Wisconsin- When I get six inches or so I usually try to go over and brush it off some just to keep from getting real worried when I get the next six inches. Take a small step ladder and a long long handled push broom or squeegee.

Thanks much for your responses guys! I liked your methods for snow removal (leaf blower, push broom, etc.) so guess I'll just monitor and make sure it doesn't get too deep. Maybe I'll post a photo if I remember.

I figured our northern folks had lots of experience with this sort of thing. I'm just gonna ignore that guy from Florida (Treeclimber) Ha!

snow on the roof of the HiLo

We northeners have a long handled snow brush with a foam head. We try to brush any large amt. of snow. Sometimes it is windy enough that mother nature helps out. Freezing rain/snow tends to get very heavy. Next week it is going to be in the 60s. Now that most all the leaves have fallen we will spend some time raking them up. DH keeps checking our HiLo cover as we have had some fierce wind storms. So far it has barely moved.

Didn't get as much snow as we thought, probably 3-4 inches. The good news is, lots of snow in the Sierra which will help our drought! Also, many of the ski resorts will be opening after this storm. Here are a few photos.

Got Heat? If it stays like that for Thanksgiving you'll need some for the nights you sleep in the Hi*Lo.

Greg, we have a similar white substance all along our beaches! SAND. I truly feel for those in the snow. I once lived in Toms River, NJ and could never get used to the cold. Luckily, being a luthier means I can be mobile. Hope you all have a great holiday.

Ah, beaches . . . I remember them! We lived on the central coast of California until a couple years ago when we retired and decided we wanted to try living in the mountains where it snows in the winter. Crazy huh?

I had to look up what a luthier is - very cool, Tree!

You bet, Garry! We'll be plugged in so will use our little electric space heater and an electric blanket so should be nice and toasty.

Just looked at the newest 10-day forecast, though, and we may get snow the night before Thanksgiving, so may need to modify our plans.

Greg, I make the violins but sell fiddles. Also make mandolins and Ukes. Make them I Fla but sell them in the Ga. mountains about two hours from Cartersville, Ga thus we stay at Clark Creek or McKaskey Creek CGs.

Jack, I suspect you are getting the same storm that we got yesterday. What elevation are you at? We are at 5,600 ft.

Something in me says to sweep all that snow off your roof before you start the heater when you sleep in it. I realize that the roof is probably watertight, but the snow will melt below the snow first and then just sit on the roof. Why tempt fate? Ten minutes and then you don't have to worry about it. Three weeks and our sorry snow-bird butts are headed to south Florida. (Yep, I am kinda rubbing it in.....)

Good advice, Jim! We have possible snow coming in while our guests are here so have decided not to chance it by sleeping in the Hi-Lo. We'll all be a little crowded in the house but we'll manage.
