Good morning-

We're still in the process of getting our '84 Funchaser ready to be our new home away from home. In the process of taking the cushions out for recovering/replacement/etc., I discovered that we have hardware in place for a drop down bunk (thanks majordad274).

I've looked at buying one, but the kit from J&R is 1/4 of what I paid for the camper, and I'm not having luck finding a used one, yet.

So, thinks I, I've got moderate carpentry skills, can I build it? I've already got the mattress/foam that would work, and I've got the tools, so why not?

I do, however, need dimensions, and possibly pictures of one.

Would anyone be willing to get me such information?

I'll happily post pictures of progress, assuming that I can get what I need:
*Measurements of the bunk dimensions
*Measurements of the piece that connects the front bracket to the bunk- the "hinge?"
*Measurements of the front fold down supports

the dimension of the bunk on mine are 42'' 80" 4.5"
the bracket with the hing is 11" and the swivel leg is 17"

If you haven't done so yet, view this instructional video on how to lower and raise the bunk. The video should help you design your bunk.

The framing material is light weight steel channel and the platform is luan or similar. If I had the trailer here right now I could get you some measurements on those.

RichR is right, I forgot to mention it is made from steel square tubing and really there is not much of wood material in it, I am not sure, but if you build it out of wood I do NOT think it can support 350lb the factory build one's were designed to support, if you know someone who can cut and weld steel tubing, it can be made in couple of hours.
