The narrowest group 24 I can find is 6 7/8th inches. Honestly, I think the only 12V battery I've seen that narrow is a motorcycle battery.

Whoa, I just measured and my group 27 is 12" long by 6" wide, and 9" tall. Not even gonna come close to fitting in your space. Are you sure that the battery goes there? That seems awful small, especially when dual batteries were an option.

A group 27 should fit nicely. 2 fit in my 2003 towlite and I might have been able to squeeze a couple group 29s in there. There really isn't a model number so much as a size and that's a group 27 marine battery or deep cycle battery.

I don't think checking the bearings is being too pushy but don't be surprised if the owner insists on doing the jacking. Hi-lo frames are lightweight and bend easily if jacked in the wrong place.

I also remember one of our members trying 6 volts and the batteries being too tall and the battery compartment lid contacted the terminals. I have dual 12 volt deep cycles on my hi-lo and have been pretty happy with them.

I purchased one at costco that had replacable heads. Very heavy duty stainless handle with a bottle opener on the end. It works great and I don't think I'll ever wear it out however they won't carry them again till spring.

You can also hook jumper cables to it like jump starting a car. Same principle, if you can get to the battery.

The click you mentioned is what makes me think your battery isn't charged or isn't making contact with the cables well. Try turning on the heater on a cool night. If the fan spins right up like normal, your battery should be fine. If it sounds slow, look at the battery.
