My mom willed her hi lo camper to my husband and I. We didn't have a owners manual, and assumed the camper was down, ITWAS NOT. We hitched it and towed it 250 miles home. Evidently we are pretty lucky we didn't have a major accident coming home. After researching it seems the safety cable may have broken. There is damage to the back exterior wall in bathroom and I can see light from inside camper. Will the hydrolic system lower with the cable broken? I assume it needs to be lowered to replace it.

Sanda, sorry to hear of your misfortune.

It's probably not a "safety cable" that's broken, but instead, a "lifting cable". If the cable is broken, the top will not lower properly because it's probably "tilted" at an angle and will bind. In fact, you are probably seeing daylight because the bulb seal is not meeting at the broken corner.

You don't have to lower the top to replace the cable, but you need to even things up. Probably the best way to do this is to purchase a "farm jack" so that you can jack the low corner up. You can place the jack between the top and the "outrigger" below it. (The trailer has 4 outriggers near each corner that the top rests on when it is fully down).

Then, once you have replaced the cable, you should be able to lift the top off the safety bar and get it down.

There are other threads in this forum on "Cable Replacement". Search for them.

Good luck!
