the more i repair my 87 22ft funchaser
well
OMG why in the world did the previous owner do such shabby maintenance on it
he own it 18 years
hi-lo's are sturdy old birds
but the poor old thing was mess when i started
i'm about half done...if it ever quits raining i'll finish by the end of june i'm thinkin'

all repairs so far have been much, much easier than i expected
the more time and love i put into it
the more it genuinely loves me back

the more time i spend on it...the more it tells me how to fix it...for real
when i'm under the hi lo my dog goes crazy under there with me....she's very jealous of the camper..lol
she crys the whole time i'm near it

when i'm done i will have a camper to be proud of
i will never sell it
and made my boys promise to never sell it when it get passed on to them
just keep on campin'

thanks everybody

Hey neighbor,

My wife and I live in Ballwin. Small world.

HiLo Repairs

My brother inlaw claims some people die of stupidity. Glad to hear you are a go getter. This very sucessful business man had a hi lo from the 1990 that he let go to rot. It went to a junk yard. Glad to hear you are restoring old faithful.

I'm doing some work on mine now. I had my own stupidity--drained the lines last fall but didn't tilt it forward--water trapped and broke some copper lines.

This old trailer is very sturdy but has seen a lot of miles. I noted some rusting of the square rails right at the front sides. I should be able to slice those out and weld new ones in. Little worried about the aluminum but shouldn't be a real big deal. Broken leaf spring so I replaced all 4. Only pet peeve is the use of the fiber board for some furniture. Rest of it is in great shape after 40? years.

What have you had to do to yours?

there ain't no fixin' stupid
wth that said
the hydraulics are fine on the camper
and there's no structural damage
except the glides are rotted out
but the long guides on the side are perfect and solid
but in my book that's not structural
just every 25 yr fix and repair

but the roof
now that was another story
but as bad as it was ....didn't really leak that much
just looked like crap ..just waiting to seriously fail
20 man hours later and less than 200 bucks it's like new

now on to the rest of the caulking
diggin it out ..and getting all the grime and moisture out
before a new application

saving the glides for last
that's the biggest mess
haven't got much of a clue where to start
i'm a pretty clever soul
the fabrication can't be that tricky
but i'm sure i'll have to be in the mood

like bakin' a cake or painting the kitchen table
ya just gotta be in the mood ....lol

Fixing my 90 HiLo Classic

We all get a "brain fart" sooner or later. We've had to fix a ripped sewer tank, put the boards down too soon as hubby was backing into our storage driveway. $60 worth of different patching materials. Got him to tight to the fence on our storage site, cracked the window, slight ding in the window frame. Shorted out a battery putting in and out of a very tight storage compartment. Have since rerouted battery to the tongue. after the sewer tank rip we had some more stone brought in and leveled with a bobcat. We also spent $100.00 to do a sl. different layout of our fencing gate and walkway gate. Much easier to back in now. FYI windows in the HILo cost $600.00. We also broke awning bracket when we broke the glass in the window. On the inside we've painted the gold on the lamps and replaced the shades. Any hardware the broke has been replaced. One time I was in the truck as he was pulling out of a campsite and he smashed the outside storage compartment on a big bolder. I think campground owners shouldn' be alowed to have huge boulders along the roadways. This was the only time I didn,t stand outside the RV when he pulled out. So glad we have a handy hubby and an older HiLo with things that can always be repaired. Any body else care to reveal a few bloopers.? We have done more things right than wrong. Lots of quality in the older HiLo.

ArkTinkerer,

Curious here... what year and model of Hi-Lo do you have?

Jim

I knew it was '70s model but thought it was reallly made in 1970 based upon Serial #7001. But I found its a model 2577 (1977 year). Pretty sure it's longer than the 25 feet maybe due to a tool/storage box on the rear.

I'm going thru the paperwork trying to figure out how to scan and upload all the manuals for this to the library so everyone can use them.

Roof

Everone needs to look at their roofs very closely. What I thought was actually bird droppings, road grime, spots, etc. on our 1996 22' Hi-Lo was actually perforation. The roof leaked and then we finally got hit with another haild storm and that was all she wrote. Roof and left wall is shot. J & R wants $6,500.00 to repair. Ain't worth that. She - is - a - gone. Has been nice talking with many of you on line and a few on the phone. Happy Hi-Lowing!

1977 HiLo

Enjoyed the picture of your HiLo. Didfn,t realize they came 25ft in the 1970. You,ll have to take some inside pictures when you get the inside restored the way you want it. It if it ever stops raining.!! The weather forecast in NY is for a solid week of rain. Only good for the lawnmower repair shops.
