How do you remove the battery and lower the unit using the manual system? Is there a valve that needs to be turned to set the jack to lower the top?

Found it!!

It is just like using a hydraulic jack. Turn the release valve on the side of the manual pump and low and behold the unit comes down all by itself!! Whoo Hoo I made the first year of winterizing my 17T!! :)

lowering the top with very little info

Hi there,
We are buying a hi-lo camper, apx 20 years old (1993ish?). The camper is apparently in really bad shape but the price is unbeatable and restoring it will be a great project. The seller tells us that the hydraulic system to raise and lower the roof has not been tested and likely does not work. Further, there is no power whatsoever. The top is currently in the up position and has not been lowered for many years. We are going to be towing it on a flat bed trailer, but still feel that the top needs to come down before towing it. It is several hours away, so going to scout it is a bit of a pain. I was wondering if someone could provide very detailed, step-by-step instructions on how to lower the top without power. I see some information in this thread, but I'm not sure where to locate the release valve, the manual pump, etc etc. Thanks so much in advance!!

You will need some kind of power to lower it as it has most likely settled on to the safety bar. You can try hooking up jumper cables to the battery leads, then try raising it to get it off the safety bar, then try lowering it. This is about the closest to your year owners manual but should be close enough to get you started. Good luck.

Thanks so much! I think this was exactly the info we needed. We will be picking it up on Sunday. I'll let you know how it goes!
