I just installed towing mirrors on my 06 tacoma.
I installed PowerVision mirrors (powervisionmirrors.com) from a 98 chevy.
First you have to find a mirror base plate that mounts to the door smaller than the toyota (98-00 chevy or 96-01 dodge), the flip up towing mirrors that dodge has will work. For sale on amazon.com for $300.
The powervision mirrors had different mounting stud locations, I just had to oval 2 of the 3 the holes in the toyota door and use stainless steel washers.
Because of the different sizes of the mirror bases, I used 3/8" thick mud flap material to make a trim piece to match up to the toyota door and mounted the mirror.
The electrical wiring for the glass adjustment on power vision mirror was 4-wire (2 common wires) and toyota was 3-wire (1 common wire). I wired the new mirrors to my stock toyota mirror adjustment switch.
The circuit for the in/out movement of the power vision mirrors, I tapped off my power window circuit.
I installed the switch in a small encloser box so I didn't have to cut into my stock toyota interior.
Now I have a high quality set of towing mirrors for safety and what toyota should have offered with there tow package.

Pics might be helpful to some others with Toys. I don't suppose you took any during the assembly? Regardless, I'd sure post what the results look like.

Update on mirror installation;
You'll notice on the third picture, the power extend/retract switch that came with the mirrors I mounted in an encloser box so I wouldn't have to cut into my dash.
I found the switch that fit in my knock-out space in the dash! No more ugly encloser box.
The rocker switch from Grainger.com, mounting hole .83x1.45, DPDT 6 terminals, momentary on/off/momentary on, Item# 2LNH4

Update to towing mirror
I installed this set up on my Tacoma in 2010 as you can see in my past post
This was the best system for my truck because aftermarket mirrors for tacomas aren't very good
On the market now are a new style of towing mirrors for Tacoma , they are like the flip up mirrors that dodge have been using for years
They are produced in China , at a cost about $165 I found on Amazon and I thought I should give them a try
The mirrors mirrors mounted up to the doors really nicely but at the pivot point of the arm that folds back for safety and car washes it was so loose there was a 11/2" play which causes the mirror to vibrate so bad it makes the mirror useless
I returned them for a refund and are back using the powervision brand mirrors
I wanted to warn people about these poorly made mirrors
