Hello all, new member here and looking to buy my first Hi-Lo. I'm looking at a model year 2024d and wondering what the roof material is made of I can't seem to find that info online. I have verified that the 1998 models all had aluminum roof and the 2004 models all had fiberglass roofs. Does anybody know what the 2000 model year roofs were made out of? Thanks for all your help

Hi and welcome! Are you sure the 2004 models had fiberglass roofs? I thought roofs were either aluminum or rubber. I've not heard of fiberglass being used in any HiLo. I don't know what the roof is in 2000 models though. I'm sure someone here does though and they will let you know.

As far as I can tell they are from the info I found online it talks or being fiberglass roof and sides for 2004. I did find a PDF file concerning the model 2000 year and those are aluminum roofs on those models. I talked to a fella that has a 2004 model for sale and he said it seemed like it was fiberglass but he wasn't positive

This picture is from a 2004 brochure and it talks of fiberglass being used for walls and roof

And this is a 2000 model year brochure that talks of an aluminum roof so I guess I answered my own question by digging online a little bit

Yes, I suspect the roof is aluminum. The sidewalls have a fiberglass skin. However, there WERE rubber roofs installed too, but I don't know which models or model years used those. My aluminum roof has held up perfectly. Some roofs have had galvanic corrosion pinholes in aluminum roofs where they contacted steel nails underneath, but my roof has not had that problem. It is easily corrected though by painting with elastomeric paint, or, by taping over the holes.

Okay I really want to stay away from a rubber roof, I'm not a big fan of them. Aluminum Jimmy seems like a much better way to go with fiberglass second to that. I'm guessing the rubber roofs came into being sometime shortly before they ended production in 2010.

I don't hear many people complaining about the fiberglass side walls being delaminated like you do on many newer campers. I bet it was a much more robust construction back then than it is now for those fiberglass side walls

I've had no problems with the sidewalls or roof on my 2007 (built in 2006) 17ft Towlite. It HAS been covered either with a sunbrella cover or in a carport (or both) most of its life though, so that may have helped quite a bit.

I had a 1990 HiLo. It had a rubber roof. I liked the rubber roof on the Classic as it was much quieter when it rained. I now have a 1996 with an aluminum. It is a Classic. Externa bond tape is used for any pin point holes. Very important to remove and reseal with butyl tape on all the windows if they are five years old. Lexell caulk is good to use on the exterior window, Use the buyers check list when checking out a used unit. Utube has a tutorial on how to remove and reseal the windows.
